Dow Jones Industrial Average Companies
What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average? The Dow Jones Industrial Average (a.k.a. Dow and Dow 30) is a stock market index which tracks the average performance of 30 blue-chip US stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a price-weighted index. That is to say that the price movement of stocks which happen to have a higher stock price will have a disproportionate influence on the price movement of the index. Also, the Dow Jones Industrial Average requires a divisor which is used to keep the index consistent over time even as the component stocks undergo periodic splits, dividend payouts, share buybacks and issuances, mergers and acquisitions, and index component replacements. The Dow is maintained by committee which attempts to select and maintain an index of 30 blue-chip stocks that are representative of the US economy as a whole less the transportation and utility sectors (those sectors are tracked by the Dow Jones Transportation Average and the Dow Jones Utility Average respectively). The Dow Jones Industrial Average is among the most closely watched and popular of all US stock market indices. It is from this pool of 30 Dow stocks that the high dividend yield Dogs of the Dow are created.
