best performing etfs post financial crisis
To get an idea as to what segments of the market outperform during a bull market, the following table list the best performing exchange-traded funds during the post-financial crisis rally -- March 9, 2009 to the most recent notable peak of May 21, 2015. While the benchmark S&P 500 was up significantly, many ETFs gained much more. Firstly, leveraged ETFs scored dramatic gains. That's to be expected. Looking deeper, however, biotech and healthcare (as a result of the aging baby boom population) in addition to technology tended to stand out.

The following table lists the 30 best performing exchange-traded funds during the bull market from March 9, 2009 to May 21, 2015.
The table includes and can be sorted on: ETF ticker symbol, ETF name, fund orientation, and post-financial crisis gain rank as well as the ETF's post-financial crisis bull market, one-month, and 12-month percent change. For summary statistics of these 30 best performing ETFs today as well as how they compare to the S&P 500, simply scroll down to view the summary table. This table is updated every day after the close.

FYI -- Orientation refers to the degree of the exchange-traded fund's leverage in addition to whether or not the ETF is an inverse fund. For example, a 2x ETF that tracks the S&P 500 will show a gain of 2% if the S&P 500 is up 1%. A -2x ETF that tracks the S&P 500 will show a loss of 2% if the S&P 500 is up 1%. The following table includes both leveraged and inverse ETFs.
