best performing etfs financial-crisis
With the advent of exchange-traded funds, investors can now easily invest in most any market (e.g. regions, sectors, styles, commodities, currencies, etc.), in any direction (i.e. long or short), and with various degrees of leverage (e.g. 1x, 2x, 3x). The result is that as long as the market is open, something is always appreciating. Take the financial crisis induced bear market that occurred from October 9, 2007 to March 9, 2009. Markets across the world plunged while the financial system itself seized. Yet, as the following table illustrates, there were some ETFs that made some hefty gains. The largest gains came from shorting various segments of the market leveraged at 2 to 1 followed by shorting the market without any leverage. Though shorting was the most lucrative approach, there were also gains to be made by going long Treasury bonds and gold.

The following table lists the 30 best performing exchange-traded funds during the bear market
from October 9, 2007 to March 9, 2009. The table includes and can be sorted on: ETF ticker symbol, ETF name, fund orientation, and financial crisis gain rank as well as the ETF's financial crisis, one-month, and 12-month percent change. For summary statistics of these 30 best performing ETFs today as well as how they compare to the S&P 500, simply scroll down to view the summary table. This table is updated every day after the close.

FYI -- Orientation refers to the degree of the exchange-traded fund's leverage in addition to whether or not the ETF is an inverse fund. For example, a 2x ETF that tracks the S&P 500 will show a gain of 2% if the S&P 500 is up 1%. A -2x ETF that tracks the S&P 500 will show a loss of 2% if the S&P 500 is up 1%. The following table includes both leveraged and inverse ETFs.
